Nineteen-year-old Nora Bell works at her mother Ruth's roadside motel in a small town in interior British Columbia, saving to study in Vancouver while providing most of the daily care for her ten-year-old brother, Owen. In the first episode, Nora receives her college acceptance letter and Ruth objects to her leaving; that night, while delivering clean sheets, Nora sees her mother smother a guest through a partly open room door. Nora takes her brother to an open gas station and calls the police, but by the time officers arrive the body has disappeared, and Ruth claims her daughter stole money and ran away, pointing to a transfer Ruth herself made into Nora's account. The first season follows Nora working with child protection staff to find Owen a safe placement and assisting the detective investigating her report; while viewers see Ruth hiding possessions taken from earlier victims, Nora tries to document the cleaning shifts her mother used to connect her to the crime scenes. In the second season, remains found in the motel's wastewater tank lead to Ruth's arrest, but rooms Nora unknowingly cleaned and suitcases she carried bring her under investigation too; Ruth pressures her daughter by writing letters that blame Nora for breaking up Owen's family. In the third season, a lie Nora told years earlier to protect her mother jeopardizes the prosecution, forcing her to tell the truth at the risk of facing charges herself while trying to build a life with her brother based on trust.
